How to Use a Portable Air Conditioner Correctly
A portable air conditioner is straightforward to use, but getting the setup right makes a big difference to performance and efficiency.
Step 1: Install the Exhaust Hose and Window Kit
Connect the exhaust hose to the back of the unit and attach the window sealing kit. The kit fits most UK window types including casement, sash and tilt-and-turn windows. Make sure the window is sealed properly — gaps will let warm air back in.
Step 2: Position the Unit Correctly
- Place the unit at least 50cm from walls and furniture
- Keep the exhaust hose as short and straight as possible
- Avoid placing the unit behind furniture that blocks airflow
- Ensure the air intake and outlet are not obstructed
Step 3: Close Doors and Windows
Portable air conditioners work best in enclosed spaces. Close all doors and windows in the room to prevent warm air from entering. This is the same principle as a refrigerator — if the door is open, it cannot maintain the temperature.
Step 4: Set the Temperature and Mode
Set the target temperature to a comfortable level — 22-24°C is typical for summer use. Use Cool mode for active cooling, Fan mode for air circulation, and Dehumidify mode on humid days.
Step 5: Drainage
Most modern portable air conditioners auto-evaporate condensation and do not need manual drainage. However, in very humid conditions, you may need to connect the drainage hose. Check your product manual for specific instructions.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using an exhaust hose that is too long — reduces efficiency
- Leaving doors or windows open — unit cannot keep up
- Placing the unit in direct sunlight — sensor reads higher than actual room temperature
- Never cleaning the filter — reduces airflow and cooling performance
